My name is Mariam Azeez and I am a senior at Danbury High School. I am a writer, poet, and author of a children's book with a goal of dismantling bullying, fear, and racism while encouraging behaviors of inclusion and diversity in children. I believe in an inclusive future for marginalized communities in education and have worked with educators in the Danbury Public School system to develop an Anti-Bullying study-guide for teachers to help create welcoming spaces for all students. I also believe in encouraging students to learn to communicate well to enable them to make changes in their communities. My world view above has been articulated in my book, in my poetry, at conferences as a speaker/panelist and in workshops I helped organize.

I believe it is important for youth to feel empowered to accomplish civic engagement.

As a Sandy Hook survivor, I organized a platform for civic engagement by youth on gun violence against children.

I serve as the Editor-in-Chief of my school’s student-run newspaper, Hatters’ Herald. I Founded (and serve as President) The Girls in Computer Science club, The Green Committee and the Muslim Student Association. I also serve as President of the Asian Club, Word Warriors and The Philosophy Club.
